Most Famous Coffee in Jambi
Kopi Murni AAA
Visitors to Jambi will undoubtedly have the opportunity to try the locally processed coffee famously known as Kopi AAA. Although some say its official name is “Kopi Murni AAA” (triple A pure coffee), the locals merely call it “Kopi AA” (kopi ah-ah) or “Kopi Tiga A” (tiga means 3). Some may refer to it as “kopi pahit” (bitter coffee–because it is quite bitter).
Most coffee drinkers are repulsed if they find coffee grounds in their coffee. Kopi AAA, however, isn’t strained. The powdered coffee is simply spooned into a glass and hot water is added. After you stir the mixture most of the grounds will settle to the bottom. This is the way Kopi AAA is served.
Another method of making Kopi AAA is to first add condensed milk to the bottom of the glass. We’ve seen the amounts vary between 1 tablespoon, to filling the glass almost ¼ of the way full with condensed milk. The coffee grounds are then added and then the hot water. This preparation is famously known as “Kopi Susu” (milk coffee).
The Cost of Kopi AAA in Restaurants (No Starbucks in Jambi)
Buying a cup of coffee in a small roadside restaurant (warung) will cost you anywhere between Rp3.000 and Rp.7.000 ($0.31 – $0.72 USD). Kopi susu will cost you approximately the same. The price depends on the quality of the restaurant, as well as you knowing the owner / waiters. We frequent a warung on the north shore of the Batanghari River in the City of Jambi (Sekoja / Sebarang) and they give us free coffee (they consider us family)!
The Cost of the Powdered Coffee
100 gram / 3.52 oz. box—Rp11.500 ($1.18 USD)
250 gram / 8.82 oz. box—Rp22.000 ($2.27 USD)
500 gram / 17.63 oz. box—Rp42.000 ($4.34 USD)
Our blog posts have given free publicity to many businesses, like the Aroma Kopi Pabrik and the Perkebuanan Teh (tea plantation and processing plant) in Bandung, and batik production in Jambi, etc., etc. We wished we would have been given access to Kopi AAA’s processing so we could make a video of it, like what we did at the above mentioned locations, but that wasn’t possible. We also hoped to speak with the marketing director of Kopi Murni AAA, but he wasn’t available to confirm the information noted below. We hope the information is correct.
Kopi Murni AAA was started in Jambi by a Chinese business man in 1966—Mr. Hidayat. The business is still owned by the same man.
We’re uncertain about the official name of this coffee. Some have said its name is “Kopi Bubuk Nefo Jambi.” Others say it’s “Kopi Murni AAA.” We’ve asked many people what the “AAA” means, but we couldn’t find anybody who knew.
The business doesn’t own coffee plantations, they purchase the coffee and then process the beans in the City of Jambi.
- Their largest processing plant can be found with this link.

- Their main office is in the pasar, and can be found with this link.
This business only makes Kopi AAA (powdered coffee). There are no other products that they produce. Kopi AAA is only produced in the City of Jambi.
Kopi AAA is not an exported product, it’s only sold in Jambi and in Pekanbaru.
