There is an old saying our mothers always used when we were playing too rough, or were swinging sticks around; and it went like this:

It’s all fun and games until somebody gets and eye poked out.

That saying came to my mind when I was thinking about the many world travelers that have a great time popping into a country then right back out again after a week or two away from home. Many people think these brief excursions are all fun and games. Due to the great travel experiences they have, and the fun time of seeing exciting sights, sounds, tastes, etc., they leave these countries of the world with the delusion that living in a foreign country long term is all fun and games.

While thinking about that, we came up with our own spin on the phrase our mothers previously used, and it goes something like this:

It’s all fun and games……., until you have to deal with the grammar, and the four to five thousand vocabulary words that need to be memorized!

Language learning has a way of taking all the fun out of living in another country.   We are making progress though, and it looks like the challenge of learning another language will be conquered, just like the other challenges of life we have overcome in the past!

(Have a great time studying!)
