Indonesians have developed a unique fishing businesses for anglers. These businesses involve the creation of fish ponds / pools that are stocked and people pay a fee to fish there. This article is about the fishing business named R & R.

The below couple of links has other articles we’ve written on fishing in the City of Jambi, and the City of Bandung.

Pemancingan R & R

Pemancingan R & R is owned and managed by Mr. Apit. His wife is also involved with the business by operating a warung (small restaurant) for the anglers. The location of this business is on Jl. Pangeran Hidayat, No. 35. The exact location on wikimapia can be found by clicking this link. The “R & R” are the first letters of the names of Mr. Apit’s two children, with the oldest being Rezki and the youngest, Reihan. This business has been open since 2003, but it was officially given its new name (R & R) in Nov. of 2012. The front of the business has a fish pond which is not in use at this time. It is hoped that the business will expand and then this particular pond will be developed for fishing like the one in the back.

The Process for Fishing

For a person to fish in this 2 meter (6.5 feet) deep pond, they must first pay the entry fee of Rp27.000 rupiah ($2.80 USD). Mr. Apit will then release 1 kilogram (2.2 LB) of fish into the pond. One kilogram of fish are added for each person who pays their entry fee. Doing this will ensure the pond is always well stocked. This particular pond is stocked with four types of fish: ikan emas (carp),  bawal, patin, and lele. Anglers can take home all the fish they catch during the fishing session they pay for, without having to paying anything extra. This is different from the location in the City of Bandung where you will have to pay a small amount per kilogram of fish caught.

Bonus

There is one very large fish in this pond which is referred to as “Ikan Maskot” (mascot fish). This fish weights over 6 kilograms (13.2 LB), and for the person who catches it, they will receive prize money of Rp.1.716.000 ($178.97 USD). This amount grows over time until someone catches the fish.  The “mascot” isn’t allowed to be taken home, it must be released back into the pond after caught.

Times for Fishing

Mr. Apit said that 150 people can fish in this pond at the same time. If someone doesn’t have fishing equipment, poles and gear can be rented for Rp10.000 ($1.04 USD). R & R is open for two fishing session each day: 8 am till 5 pm, then 5 pm till the next morning. Anglers who are already fishing at 5:00 pm can stay longer, but they must repay another Rp27.000 if they want to continue fishing through another session.

Due to Muslim’s frequenting mosques at noon on Fridays (sholat jumat–Friday Prayers), the business is closed Friday mornings and opens at 5:00 pm.
