Many Indonesians have very strong beliefs in amulets, and these objects can be seen in use everywhere. One such amulet, which is usually carried in a pocket or wallet, is the “Haikal Kulit Kijang.” This could be translated as “The Powerful Deer Skin,” or “The Empowered Deer Skin.”

This object is is a small piece of skin (2″ x 4″) which is said to be from a type of deer common to Indonesia (kijang).

The shaman / witch doctor (dukun, orang pintar, orang pandai) will take a piece of paper with Arabic writing on it, put it through a ritual, then fold it up and then fold the deer skin around it. He will then sew the skin shut. Neither the person who carries the deer skin, nor the shaman, knows what is written on the paper, since it is written in the Arabic language. Relatively few Indonesians can translate the Arabic language.

The person who owns the skin is then is said to be protected from evil spirits and all sorts of unfortunate circumstances.

Directions On its Use

The yellowish green paper pictured immediately above on the left comes with the deer skin and it has directions on how the Haikal Kulit Kijang is to be used. This is our translation of that green paper:

`

Haikal Kulit Kijang

This packet of poetic verses, if God wills it to happen, will bring great blessings and benefits, because in this skin pouch, there are chosen verses of poetry which will bring the bearer:

1. KESELAMATAN: ( Salvation and Safety)

  • This will shield you by making you a fortification against all the powers of evil, as well as the evil intentions of men.

2. HIJABUL A’DAK (we couldn’t find anybody who could translate these words)

  • Carrying this will cause you to be respected and honored by your friends and enemies, and if God so wills it, it won’t be easy for others to put you down or make you to become of little importance.

3. BABUR RIZQI (we couldn’t find anybody who could translate these words)

  • If God so wills, when you start a business it will flow smoothly and will quickly bring a good income.

4. TOLAK BALAK (Block curses)

  • These verses will protect you from all evil that would come from jin (genie) and satan (syaiton).

There are still many other unnamed benefits that will be obtained from using Haikal Kulit Kijang.

`

Using this will not undermine and is not in

opposition to Islamic law.

`

How to Use it

  • Place it on the top of your kopyah (hats Muslim men wear).
  • Carry it in your pocket or wallet.

`

To guard and maintain the powers of blessings that can come from this Haikal Kulit Kijang:

1)    Guard yourself from all negative thoughts, like arrogance and pride.

2)    Don’t make this object sacred or worship it.

3)    Place a drop of saffron oil on the skin. One drop is enough, and this should be done on Thursday nights (malam Jum’at).

[It is a widely held belief that ghosts, evil spirits, etc., wander about on Thursday nights.]

4) When you use this HAIKAL, read “Basmalah 3x”  with one single breath. [“In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.]

  • Then read: “Yes Allah, if you are willing, I respectfully request your salvation and blessing which can come from this HAIKAL Amin, Amin, Amin.”

Banten has a factory that makes most of these amulets. It’s common for people from Banten to live in other areas of Indonesia and sell these objects on the streets.
