Proklamasi Kemerdekaan (Proclamation of Independence)

In the City of Jambi, on the street Jl. R. Mattaher, directly in front of the building named “Gedung Balai Wanita,” there is a monument that was erected in memory of Indonesia’s independence from all foreign colonial authorities (specifically the Dutch).

Indonesia gained it’s independence through a long hard struggle following WWII. The proclamation of independence was made on August 17, 1945.

The words on the above placard, as found on the monument, is not written with the modern spelling. It is as follows:

Proklamasi

Kami bangsa Indonesia dengan ini menjatakan kemerdekaan Indonesia.

Hal² jang mengenai pemindahan kekuasaan dan lain² diselenggarakan dengan tjara saksama dan dalam waktu jang sesingkat-singkatnja.

PROCLAMATION

WE THE PEOPLE OF INDONESIA HEREBY DECLARE THE INDEPENDENCE OF
INDONESIA. MATTERS WHICH CONCERN THE TRANSFER OF POWER AND
OTHER THINGS WILL BE EXECUTED BY CAREFUL MEANS AND IN THE
SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME.
