In the Jambi Province there is a unique ethnic group that is well known throughout the islands of Indonesia. They are the “Anak Dalam” (also called “Orang Rimba,” and by a more degrading term, “Kubu”).

In the December 29, 2010 edition of the “Tribun Jambi,” pg 9, we found an article about the Anak Dalam. We translated it below for those who may be interested in reading about them.

The Anak Dalam,  & Where they Live
The exact location of the Kubu Tribe (also known as the Anak Dalam, and Orang Rimba) is difficult to ascertain, since some of the small groups among them are mobile.

The below picture is a map of the Jambi Province. The Kubu Tribe primarily live within this province. Their locations are marked by the purple dots on the map.

The primitive Kubu tribe (also known as the Anak Dalam, or Anak Rimba) have long been viewed as being among the most uneducated of peoples. That view is beginning to change, as the Kubu have begun to embrace education.

The Kubu (also known as the Anak Dalam, or the Anak Rimba) are among Southeast Asia’s last and best known hunter-gatherer tribes. My wife and I visited these good people and while there spent some time sharing with them some gifts made by American school children.
