The Highs and Lows of the Batanghari River

This picture was taken on August 28, 2013. It is the Batanghari River, with the WTC Mall / Hypermart Dept. Store. The picture also shows the construction taking place on the foot bridge that is currently being built across the river.

During the last year we took monthly pictures of the Batanghari River, observing its levels in the City of Jambi.

We assembled the pictures in the below video. From the pictures it’s obvious to see that the peak of the rainy season is February and the peak of the dry season is August-September.

During Feb. 2013 the flooding in parts of the city, as well in upstream areas was quite severe.

The Batanghari River is the longest on the island of Sumatra, around 500 miles in length. The source of the river is from the far western mountain range in the Jambi Province, known as the Bukit Barisan (row of hills).

Batanghari River Bridges

This bridge is located on the west side of the City of Jambi. It’s called Aur Duri I, or Batanghari I.

For crossing the Batanghari River, the City of Jambi has two bridges. One on the west side of the city and one on the east. These bridges have two names that are commonly used:
